A straight-bar rib machine has cranked instruments 5 mounted forwardly of the sinker bed 4a which are slidably mounted in a bed 6 to be selectively operated by the pattern bits of a pattern drum 13 either to receive the yarn normally fed to the corresponding machine needles and subsequently cast it off into the fabric or to be interposed between the needle and preset edge whereby tuck work effects can be achieved. The pattern drum is mounted to cause the pattern bits to engage the ends of the instruments 5 often the drum has been rotated by a ratchet mechanism by the drum sliding towards the instruments caused by the action of a toggle linkage 23, 24 controlled by a cam 40 on the main cam shaft 41. The rib fabric produced on the machine includes tuck stitches and float work selectively dispersed throughout the fabric, for example, as illustrated in Fig. 5, not shown.
