A straight-bar machine having a series of needles frictionally held in a needle bar so as to be capable of selection for colour patterning by means of sliders 8 and pattern drum mechanism as described in Specification 1,001, 591, is provided with elements 4 mounted to be capable of adjustment with the selvedge stop mechanism for the yarn carriers and for slidable movement to engage above the needles 1b extending beyond the operative selvedge needles so as to retain these needles 1b in an inoperative lowered position to avoid the yarns from the carriers engaging them. In addition to the elements 4, members 10 are provided which are secured to a slide 5 on which the elements 4 are mounted to be projected adjacent the end selvedge needle when the elements 4 are projected to engage above the yarn extending from the carrier to the selvedge needle and ensure that the selvedge loops are held down when the selected needles rise. The elements 4 are projected beneath the sliders 8 and are thereby supported when the needle bar is raised. The slide 5 at each end of the row of needles supporting the element 4 and member 10 is slidably controlled from the cam shaft of the machine through a pivoted arm 7. The slide 5 rides on a block 6 which is secured to bars 26, 27 attached to a screw nut 24 which is adjusted by pawl and ratchet mechanism controlling the selvedge stops so that any variation in the selvedge stops has corresponding effect on the needle controlling elements 4.
