Abstract

1,109,161. Knitting-machines. WILLIAM COTTON Ltd. 14 April, 1965 [18 April, 1964], No. 16162/64. Heading D1C. A needle selecting mechanism for a straight bar machine having needles frictionally mounted in the bar, or a flat-bed machine comprises a series of sliders, controlled electro mechanically, which engage the needle butts and prevent the needles rising to the full height. In one embodiment selected sliders 19 are projected by rows 29a of solenoids 29 into the path of butts 12a so that when the bar is raised the needles rise to tuck height only. Similar controls 20, 30, 30a retain the needles at an inoperative height when the bar is raised. The sliders are returned to a selecting position by bar 28 A single row of sliders may be mounted in a bracket movable to either of two levels. In a modification Fig. 3 (not shown) sliders 19, 20 are moved by the solenoids via intermediate sliders. In an alternative embodiment Fig. 5 (not shown) selected needles are retained at either or both said levels by sliders, alternate ones of which are attracted by electromagnets of two groups (55, 56).
