1480913 Knitting machines SINGER CO 6 Sept 1974 [12 Nov 1973] 38942/74 Heading D1C A cam section for a knitting machine, e.g. for controlling dial needles 28, 30, comprises a stitch cam 26, a wing cam 24 spaced therefrom by a gap 66, butts 32 of needles 28, 30 in welt position passing below the cam 24, and one or more bridging cams 68, 70 arranged to engage needle butts 34, 36 respectively to prevent displacement of the needles from welt to tuck or knit position under stitch tension or centrifugal force while the butts 32 are traversing the gap 66. In the cam system shown, which is also applicable to a needle cylinder, all needles are initially raised by a cam 12, the needles 28, 30 then being raised to tuck or knit position or being allowed to return to the welt position under the wing cam 24 depending on the positions of respective raise cams 14, 16 which are adjustable by rack and pinion gearing. Guard cams 20, 22 are movable with the raise cams 14, 16. The stitch cam 26 is adjustable for quality control by a screw 62. The bridging cams shown are retractable at right angles to the plane of the cams to allow adjustment of the guard cams 20, 22 into whose path they normally extend. In a second embodiment the bridging cams are integral with the respective guard cams. In a third embodiment the bridging cams are screwed in place and must be removed when the raise and guard cams are to be adjusted. The needles may be selected to miss, tuck or knit by pattern wheels instead of the adjustable raise cams 14, 16. Preferably the bridging cams extend downstream of the gap 66, to the left as shown, to guide needles as far as the cam 12 of the next cam system.
