A cylinder-and-dial machine has a cam section 10, 66 for both the cylinder and the dial in which each has raise cams 12, 14 and 68, 70 and also stitch cams 38 and 92 which are all adjustable in directions substantially parallel to their respective cam surfaces. This ensures that for any adjustment for timing or setting of the needles the path followed by the needles is along lines the projections of which form angles which are invariant, as shown in Fig. 1. The setting and timing of the needle action can be adjusted accordingly, dependent on whether interlock fabric is produced on all needles or whether alternate needles are rendered inoperative in each bed for the production of a coarse rib fabric. Where a fine rib fabric is to be produced and the gating of the needles adjusted accordingly, such that all needles are operative and knit at each feeding station an auxiliary cam 44 is provided in the cylinder cam section, or it may be provided in the dial cam section, and is raised to cause the cylinder needles to be elevated to a height at which they pass the dial needles hook to hook. Subsequently the needles may be raised to knit a tuck height and subsequently. lowered by the stitch cam' or they may stay at this height until lowered by the stitch cam to welt height. The raise cams are controlled by rack and pinion mechanisms to slide in grooves in their respective cam sections and the stitch cams are adjustable by a screw control and biassed by a spring. The auxiliary cam 44 is secured by a screw clamp in an operative or inoperative position in the cam section 10.
