A knitted fabric is produced on a flat knitting-machine having a circulating cam carriage sliding over two pairs of needle beds located one behind the other and is characterized in that it is produced without a selvedge. As the cam carriage 1 moves to the first needle of a bed a stop 2 rotates a peg 3 and cam 5 which moves a slide 6 to operate an adjustable gripper (not shown) which traps the beginning of the thread. The thread is not released until the course of stitches has been started.
