A lock for a flat machine includes appropriately contoured stitch-transfer and stitchreceiving tracks into which butts can be selectively diverted so that stitch transfer can take place between the beds in either direction irrespective of the traverse direction. A system for acting on needle butts comprises a transfer cam 1 with needle advancing protuberances 2, 3 defining a transfer track 6, and retractable receiving cams 5, 5' defining track 7. The entrances to track 7 are guarded by bolt switch cams 4, 4'. If transfer is to take place during traverse from right to left cam 4 is inserted in the lock corresponding to the bed from which transfer will occur. The needles are thereby prevented from entering track 7 advanced by projections 2, 3 and then received from the latter by receiving needles advanced by cam 5' in the opposite bed. Transfer may similarly occur between the beds during the opposite traverse by inserting cam 4'. In the modified lock shown switch cams 4", 4"' and receiving cams 5", 5"' for jacks and an axiliary jack cam 9 are provided so that transfer can occur in both directions on a single traverse. Transfer needles are selected by inserting jack cams 4", while receiving needles are selected by auxiliary jack cams 9 which bring the jacks into the range of receiving cams 5"'. For transfer on the opposite traverse cams 4"', 5" are operative.
