A cam carriage for a flat machine has cam systems 6, 7 for transferring stitches from either bed to the other independently of the direction of movement in which the receiving cams 9, 11 are movable longitudinally so that the needles controlled are advanced later than the transferring needles whatever the carriage direction. The systems may be located on the same side of the knitting systems 2, 3, transfer may occur in both directions in one course. The systems 9, 11 are mounted on a block shiftable longitudinally via a linkage from an actuating rod, and pivotable about an axis to withdraw cams 16 from the path of the butts.
