Abstract

539,759. Knitting. INTERWOVEN STOCKING CO. June 21, 1940, Nos. 10716 and 10717. Convention dates, Oct. 5, 1939 and Feb. 17, 1940. [Class 74 (ii)] A top for a full fashioned stocking ds knitted upon a circular machine operating by reciprocation to form courses ending at each end in a longitudinal selvedge, an elastic thread being fed to selected needles in selected courses and floated vertically from course to course in which it contained. In the form described, the elastic thread E is laid in without knitting in courses c displaced by courses a, b, the longitudinally extending floats E<SP>1</SP> occuring alternatively at the two selvedges. To form an antiravelling edge, a ground or inelastic thread B is fed to all of the needles and the elastic thread E is fed so as to be interlaced in front of and below the latches of alternate needles, and in rear of the intervening needles. To facilitate transfer of the top to the needles of the straight-bar machine a course f of larger loops of the inelastic thread may be knitted. The tops are knitted upon a circular latch-needle machine in which needles are omitted from a portion G of the cylinder and in which the cylinder is reciprocated for approximately two and a quarter revolutions in each direction. Means for selecting the needles for fashioning is omitted. Feeders 16, 17 for suppling the inelastic thread B and elastic thread E are disposed at opposite sides of the cylinder, and selecting cams 14, 15 operative upon butts of jacks arranged below alternate needles in the two directions of movement of the cylinder, are arranged for radial movement from inoperative position to positions in which they engage either the long butts only or all the butts. Knitting cams are not provided in connection with the feeder 17, the elastic yarn being merely caught in the fabric without being knitted. Knitting cams 6, 7 are provided for action upon the needles at the feeder 16. Latchopening devices 18, 19 are arranged in front of the feeders 17, 16 to open the latches when beginning the first course of each top, and are controlled by pattern mechanism so as to be moved into operative position immediately before a top is to be set up on the bare needles, and to be withdrawn thereafter to inoperative position.
