Abstract

642,263. Knitting-machines. SANDERSON, F. L. Feb. 10, 1948, No. 3819. [Class 74 (ii)] Auxiliary pressers A having a grooved portion B along their front edges and shoulders A<SP>2</SP> formed on their rear edges are provided in a straight - bar machine to facilitate the formation of a welt. During the feeding of the initial course, the pressers A engage every alternate needle so that the yarn is engaged by the rear edge of the presser and is then engaged by welt hooks inserted to take the yarn after it has been cast off the pressed needles. On completion of the welt the hooks are disposed so that the loops extending between them are positioned above the needles engaged by the pressers A, the pressers and needles then being raised to take the loops from the welt hooks. The shoulders A<SP>2</SP> of the pressers engage the yarn of the initial courses extending between the welt hooks and support the yarn to enable the welt hooks to be withdrawn, after which the pressers return to an inoperative position and knitting continues in the normal manner. Each welt hook is formed with a rearwardly-rising throat and an underside portion which is inclined downwardly and serves to take up the slack in the loop held by the hook when the initial course is returned to the needles. Alternatively the pressers may be arranged to cooperate with the needles only during the transfer of the initial course from the welt hooks to the needles.
