Abstract

1,003,269. Knitting. SCOTT & WILLIAMS Inc. Nov. 4, 1963 [Nov. 23, 1962], No. 43527/63. Headings D1C and D1K. A tubular fabric knitted on a four-feed circular knitting machine comprises a pattern extending completely round its circumference with a repeat n wales wide and 2n courses long and consisting of special stitches of which only one appears in each wale of a repeat and each patterned course of a repeat, an identical repeat being displaced from any chosen repeat by four courses wale wise and less than n wales course wise, the fabric comprising a number of wales which is an integral multiple of n plus the last mentioned number of wales. The special stitches may be tuck, welt, held or float stitches. As shown, Fig. 1, n = 6 and the number of wales between repeats is two but n may be 5, 4 or 3, Figs. 2, 3 and 4 (not shown). As shown, Fig. 6, a four feed rotary cylinder machine comprises needles 32, intermediate jacks 36 and rocking pattern jacks 38 each with lower and upper butts 44, 48 and frangible pattern butts 46. At each feed, 52, 54, 56, 58, there may be more than one yarn feeding finger so that patterning may be by reverseplating or selective floating or a reinforcing thread may be fed. Following stitch drawing movements at each feed, cams 92, 94, 96, 98 raise the needles to tuck height. At feeds 52 and 56 cams 100 and 104 then lift the needles to clearing height. At feeds 54 and 58, cams 112, 114 effect selection of pattern jacks all of which have been pushed out by cams 116, 118. The cam selecting means comprises a trick wheel 115 having a ratchet 119 so that it is stepped by a pawl 117 reciprocated by cams rotated in time'with the needle cylinder. Butts on elements carried by wheel 115 engage levers 113 carrying cams 112. A machine with a stationary needle cylinder may be used.
