[Class 74 (ii)] A machine having means for feeding yarns in plating relation is provided with means for catching and moving one of the yarns so that it will feed at an angle to the other yarn appreciably greater than that at which it would normally be fed by the feeder. The yarn engaging member consists of a hook 20, Figs. 3 and 10, that is slidably mounted in a bracket 17 on the latch ring 5 and is movable tangentially of the needle cylinder under control of a spring 26 and a bell-crank lever 23-25. In Fig. 10 one of two yarns 66, 65 supplied by a feeder 16 is engaged by the hook 20 and drawn away from the other varn so as to be fed close to the needle circle. The movement of the hook 20 to operative position is limited by an adjustable member. For patterning purposes, e.g. during the knitting of the leg and foot of a stocking, the lever 23-25 is operated by a stud 49 on a rod 47, Fig. 6, that is lowered, against the action of a spring 50, by lever and link connections 43, 44 from a lever 41 controlled by a pattern wheel 38. To avoid special timing of the pattern wheel 38, cams 54, 55 are provided on a drum 53 on the cam shaft 10 to operate the lever 41 and hook 20 at the beginning of the leg and foot respectively. The hook 20 is moved and held out of range of the yarn guides during the knitting of unornamented parts, e.g. the heel and toe, by a lever 36 operated by the clutch actuating lever. To facilitate release of the yarn 65 by the hook 20 during yarn changing, the guide 16 is withdrawn in two stages by the action of stepped cams 59, Fig. 6, on a lever 60 associated with the yarn guide controlling fingers 12.
