[Class 74 (ii)] A circular machine having yarn - changing mechanism such as is described in Specifications 301,350, [Class 74 (ii)],and 408,598 and a splicing-yarn feeder to supply a yarn to a group only of needles, e.g., substantially one half of the needles, is provided with means whereby at the beginning of the knitting of the heel of a sock, the splicing thread is withdrawn as the heel yarn is introduced. Upon completion of the heel, the splicing yarn is introduced simultaneously with the change from heel yarn to foot yarn. The feeder 31 for the splicing yarn is moved by a spring 43 into feeding position, and is normally moved positively into non- feeding position by a lever 45 operated by a cam 69. When the splicing yarn is not required, a pattern-controlled stop lever 115 engages the lever 45 to prevent movement of the lever 45 by the cam 69. For operating the feeder 31 when the heel yarn is introduced, a cam 147 is provided upon the shaft 40 which carries the cams controlling the main-yarn changing. The cam 147 actuates an elbow lever 151, connected by a link 157 to the lever 45. The yarntrapping device 59 for the splicing yarn is actuated by cams 63, 65, 67, lever 71, and push rod 95. Stitch-slackening cams 121, 123 are provided so that longer loops can be drawn during splicing. Specifications 195,043, [Class 74 (ii)], and 414,039 also are referred to.
