[Class 74 (ii)] In knitting hose and half-hose in string formation upon a cylinder- and-dial machine, after completing a toe 508 and making some extra courses 510, run-stop courses 511 are knitted, the stitches are then cast off every alternate cylinder needle and these needles remain inactive while knitting proceeds as shown at 513, on the intervening cylinder needles until, at the commencement of the new stocking, rib needles are brought into operation in place of the inactive cylinder needles to knit a rib top 501. At the completion of the rib top, the loops are transferred from the rib needles to the alternate cylinder needles and plain fabric 503 is knitted using all the cylinder needles. At the commencement of the new stocking, the rib needles knit a course, then hold their loops while the intervening cylinder needles knit a number of courses, and are restored to activity, so that a welt 500 is produced. Transfer needles 132 are provided in the dial, and each needle comprises a portion having a shoulder 136. Immediately behind the shoulder 136 is a recess 137 from which extends a spring arm 138 forming a recess into which the cylinder needle 230 can slide. Fingers 130, one to each dial needle, are pivoted in the dial cap for controlling the needles, and are provided with operating butts 130d, 130e, engaged by actuating levers 280, 281. The fingers 130 may be used not only for projecting the dial needles for transferring the loops, but also for patterning purposes. The tension in the yarn may be varied by providing additional tensioning means which can be released under control of a pattern drum. A binder and cutter, Fig. 23, for the yarns is mounted upon the dial cap 129. A binder arm 363 is spring urged at 364 for holding a severed yarn and co-operates with a loose pivoted binder 365. The cutter 366 is normal spring pressed into cutting position and has an extension 370 connected by a link 371 to a lever engaging a pattern drum. The needle cylinder can be raised to increase the tension in the fabric when knitting the stocking top and the heel and toe. Specification 498,465 is referred to.
