Abstract
209,190. Stibbe, C. H. D. C. Oct. 5, 1922. Circular machines; knitting, methods of.- A tubular fabric knitted from two or more yarns by continuous circular knitting the fabric in one . part of the tube being composed mainly of one yarn while the fabric in the other part is composed mainly the other or others is obtained by the use of yarn feeds at different levels and different clearing levels for the two sets of needles. Cams are employed to raise the needles of the two sets to clear and take yarn at different levels, the low level feeder being moved to a high level when necessary to prevent the wrong needles from taking yarn therefrom. When the leg of a hose or similar part is being knitted, a cam 1 acts upon long butts 2<a> and short butts 3a of the needles 2, 3 to cause all the needles to clear and take yarn at a high level feeder 4. When the split foot effect is to be made, the cam 1 is moved out by the action of a pattern drum so as to miss the short-butt needles which are then raised bv a clearing cam 5 to take yarn from a low level feeder 6. A few needles take both yarns in order to join the sole and instep fabrics together. The unknitted yarn floats across the inside of the tube and is subsequently cut away. The low level feeder 6 is moved upwards to miss the longbutt needles when required by any well known means. The instep fabric may be horizontally striped.
