Abstract

705,585. Knitting. SCOTT & WILLIAMS, Inc. Oct. 4, 1950 [Oct. 6, 1949], No. 24262/50. Class 74 (2) Under the sole of the foot of a circularly knitted stocking, adjacent to a reciprocatorily knitted heel, extends a gusset united by sutures to'two wedges, one on each side of the stocking, which wedges are located just below a line running directly from the inner end of the heel suture to the instep, taper to a point at the front of the instep and are knit, each as continuing courses without any sutures intervening between it and either the adjacent leg instep fabric or the adjacent foot instep fabric, providing fullness adjacent to the ankle. The leg is formed by knitting, in succession, by widening and/or narrowing as required, the areas 10, 11 (first on one side and then on the other) 14, 13 and 15 (on one side and then on the other) which completes the stocking up to the line D, B, 17, or D<1>, B, 17. In the stocking of Fig. 1, knitting is continued, starting with the line DB on each side and narrowing (one needle per course along DC and one needle per two courses along BC) to produce the triangular extension 18 of the area 15. The narrowed and widened heel segments 7, 8 are next knitted. Now knitting is continued on the heel segment needles and needles are taken in as required at each end to produce an insert 19 stretching through the point E and under the foot, whereafter circular knitting of the foot is commenced. Thus a single-sided suture DC and double-sided sutures CB, BA are produced. In Fig. 2, when the line D<1>B17 has been reached, the narrowed and widened heel segments 7, 8 are knitted. Then, starting with the needles between B and some point B1, reciprocatory knitting is continued, needles being added at one end to form the single-sided suture BD<1> and removed at a slower rate at the other end, to form the areas 21. The insert 22 is now knitted under the sole, needles being added at each end to form the double-sided sutures B<1>C<1>. Circular knitting of the foot then begins. The area 19, plus the areas 18, or the area 22 plus the areas 21, constitute tapered inserts providing fullness adjacent to the ankle.
