Abstract
629,236. Knitting. SCOTT & WILLIAMS, Inc. Oct. 9, 1945, Nos. 26307 and 26308. Convention dates, Oct. 10, 1944, and May 31, 1945. [Class 74 (ii)] The heel of a stocking includes two adjacent progressively narrowed gussets 8, 11, the first course of the gusset 11 containing more wales than does the starting course of the gusset 8. Before beginning the gusset 8, more than half the needles are rendered inactive. The gusset is then formed by narrowing at the rate of one needle per course. To begin the gusset 11, all those needles picked out of action whilst making the gusset 8 are restored; but, in addition, on the first stroke of the machine, three additional inactive needles at the trailing end of the active group are picked into action and, on the next stroke, a further three needles are brought into action at the other end of the group; this avoids the formation of eyelets at the heel corners. The gusset 11 is then knitted by narrowing at the rate of one needle per course, contains more courses and more wales than the gusset 8 and is narrowed beyond the wale where gusset 8 ended. A third, preferably widened, gusset 19 may be added, all idled needles except instep needles being restored to action and widening being carried out over, say, six courses before rotary knitting is resumed. A widened gusset 21, corresponding to a high heel reinforcement, may be formed before the gusset 8. The last course of rotary knitting will include the points 16, 17, 18. All needles, except those at the back of the stocking between the point 17 and its fellow on the other side are rendered inactive and the gusset is then formed by reciprocation, widening taking place along the suture line 17, 18 and its fellow.
