Abstract
640,342. Knitting. ROBOTTOM, F. H. Dec. 5, 1944, No. 24250. [Class 74 (ii)] In producing a stocking, a blank (chaindotted line 20) is knitted on a circular machine, mainly by rotation ; a heel pouch 12 with suture lines is formed in the blank by removing, as a group, needles, including at least the instep needles, to loop-holding inactivity, progressively increasing or decreasing the number of such inactive needles and then re-introducing them, as a group ; the leg is shaped, either by cutting the fabric tube along line 21<SP>1</SP>, after removal from the machine, or by producing, during rotary knitting, a gap extending up the back of and converging towards the top of the leg, and by seaming the edges together, and the toe is formed by cutting out (along lines 181) two opposed tapered gussets from the tube and seaming the cut edges together at 18. The blank may be knitted either towards or from the toe. The leg part 10 and foot and toe part 'are formed by rotary knitting and the heel pouch by reciprocatory knitting. The toe is closed by linking or stitching.
