Abstract

640,634. Knitting. ROBOTTOM, F. H. April 27, 1945, No. 10599. [Class 74 (ii)] The heel of a stocking blank produced on a circular machine is knitted as a band 9 having selvedged edges 10. The band 9 is formed continuous with the leg portion by reciprocatory knitting on a group of heel needles, while the instep needles are inactive. The needle at each edge of the group of heel needles knits only at every alternate course and is raised to a loop holding position during the knitting of the intermediate courses so that the selvedge loops extend over two courses. Rotary knitting is then continued to form the foot portion, which is united to the heel portion at the foot bottom 12. To form the stocking the blank is cut and seamed, the heel portion being severed from the foot bottom 12 at 11-13 and the selvedge edges 11-11<SP>1</SP> seamed thereto, and the severed edges 11<SP>1</SP>-13<SP>1</SP> of the heel are seamed together. The toe pouch may be formed by cutting two tapered gussets 18 from the tube and seaming the edges together. Specification 640,342 is referred to.
