Abstract

413,279. Knitted hosiery. MINARD, A. G., High Street, Earl Shilton, Leicestershire, and WILDT & CO., Ltd., Adelaide Works, Leicester. Jan. 17, 1933, Nos. 1577 and 35468. [Class 74 (ii).] A stocking is initially produced on a circular machine, as a seamless tube with a pouched heel, without fashioning at the toe. Portions of the leg, heel, foot-bottom, and toe are subsequently cut away, the cut edges being seamed or sewn together to give a shaped article, e.g. as shown in Fig. 2. Knitting may be begun at either end of the tube. The welt 10, and the leg 11 and instep, are knitted in the usual manner from suitable materials. A reinforcing yarn is preferably introduced, say at 12, to form a high splice, and continued through the heel pouch 13 which is formed by reciprocation. The sole is spliced in the ordinary way. The foot 14 and the toe 15 are formed by rotary knitting, the yarn for the toe being that used in the sole. As an alternative a square heel (Fig. 6) may be formed without the use of pickers, being cut along the line 24-25 and opened out as in Fig. 7. The outermost wales adjacent the edges such as 24, 25, or a few adjacent wales near these outer edges may be knitted more slackly than the remainder of the heel pouch. In a modification, the heel pouch is formed in part by narrowing and widening courses, conveniently at the commencement and finish of the heel formation, so forming a partially square heel produced with the aid of a few needles at each end of the set of needles employed in knitting the pouch. Cutting. The stocking is shaped by folding with creases running down the front and back, and cutting along lines 16. To shape the toe, an inverted V-shaped piece of material may be cut from both layers as in Fig. 8, the apex being at the point 21 or some other point such as 22. Alternatively, cuts 16, 20 may be made as in Fig. 3. Seaming may be carried out in any desired manner, preferably by chain stitching followed by overlocking. Overlocking may be omitted at the toe. Mock fashion marks may be made in one or more parallel rows inclined to the axis of the tube, e.g. a single row 27, or two rows 27, 28. In this latter case, row 27 may serve to guide the commencement of the cut 16. A stocking is described in which the gauge is not less than 3¢ inches diameter x 240 needles.
