STOCKING Louis H. Mendelsohn, Paterson, N. J.
Application March 20, 1942, Serial No. 435,587
8 Claims.
My invention relates to hosiery, and itis an object of the inventionto provide a simple and inexpensive stocln'ng or sock and method of making the same, involving the manufacture and use of a simple and inexpensive flat-knitted foot blank having heel, sole and toe portions shaped during the knitting operation to t the foot, the blanks being knitted as stringwork, and each foot blank being seamed to a leg portion after seaming the toe portion to close the toe. The leg may be made in any suitable manner, a preferred manner lbeing to cut the leg and instep portions from a length of cloth and seam it up the back so as to make a good t in the leg portion. The leg may be made of net, either plain net fabric or figured or fancy lace, and if made of inelastic or thin fabric a knitted welt may be attached to it at the upper end.
Another object is to provide a stocking with a fashioned foot but having no seam under the foot sole to cause discomfort.
Referring to the drawing, which is made a part of this application, and in which similar reference characters indicate similar parts:
Fig. l'shows a length of stringwork knitted according to my invention and comprising successive foot blanks separated by ravel sections, and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a completed stocking.
In the drawing, reference character II) indicates a stocking leg, preferably shaped by cutting it from a length of cloth. It is here indicated as consisting of net fabric, but obviously may be lace, jersey or other fabric. The leg has a knitted welt portion II seamed thereto at I2, the net not being suitable for a welt, and the leg portion is preferably sewed up the back as at I3.
The instep portion I5 is preferably of the same material as the leg portion, and a foot portion is secured to the leg and instep portions, preferably by seaming the upper edges of the same to the lower edges of the leg and instep, as shown at IS. The foot portion includes a fashioned heel I'I, preferably though not necessarily having a narrowed or French high heel portion, a narrow sole portion I8, and a toe portion IS seamed or looped at 20, 2| and having a fashioning line at each side at 22. It will be seen that there is no uncomfortable seam under the foot, yet the foot portion is shaped so as to fit well at the heel and toe.
Details of the blank for forming the heel, sole and toe are shown in Fig. l, this figure showing so much of a length of knitted stringwork as will suffice for two foot blanks. In this figure, reference characters i1, I3 and IS respectively indicate the same parts as in Fig. 2, the portion 23 indicating the high heel portion of the hose, between which and the adjacent toe portion there is shown a waste or handling section 24 that is to be raveled off prior to the seaming or looping of the toe. A draw thread 25 is interposed at the junction between the high heel and the waste section.
Narrowing marks are indicated at 26 in the heel portion and at 2l in the toe portion, and widening is indicated by the step-like conformation immediately preceding the narrowing in the toe portion. In the heel the stepwise widened portion is separated from the narrowed portion by a parallel-sided section 28, the heel portion being narrower than the toe portion of the blank. Run-stopping apertures 29 may be provided in the heel portion, as in my application Ser. No. 390,160, filed April 24, 1941, now Patent No. 2,278,277.
In completing the stocking to be made with my improved foot blank, the draw thread is removed to separate a blank from the' remainder of the stringwork and the waste section 24 is raveled off. Then the edges at 3U, 3H of the toe are folded over the intermediate edge portion at 3I and sewed or looped thereto, and the side edges 32, 32 are seamed together, thus closing the toe, the narrowing marks 21 appearing at the fashiom'ng line 22 in the stocking.
The leg blank, including a welt I I either knitted integrally therewith or otherwise attached thereto, is sewed at the back in the form of the invention here shown, though I do not limit myself to any particular method of making the leg of the hose. Then the leg is ready for attachment of the foot, which is preferably done by juxtaposing the lower edges of the leg and instep with the free or upper edges of the foot and seaming them together as at I6.
It will be ob-Vious to those skilled in the art that my methods and their products may bevaried in many respects, all without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawing and described in the specification, but only as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is: y
1. A method of making stockings comprising the steps of knitting a unitary fashioned blank having heel, sole and toe portions, closing the toe,
and seaming the outer edges of said blank to the lower end of a leg portion.
2. A method of making fashioned hose comprising the steps of knitting a flat-fiashioned foot blank having heel, sole and toe portions, seaming the toe, cutting a at leg blank, seaming together the longitudinal edges of the leg blank to form a leg portion,'and seaming the outer edges of the foot portion to the lower end of the leg portion.
3. A method of making hose comprising the step of knitting a series of fashioned foot blanks in immediate succession as stringwork, and narrowing and widening each of said blanks during the knitting operation so as to provide a narrow sole and wider heel and toe portions.
4. Knitted stringwork for hosiery, comprising a series of ilat foot blanks knitted in immediate succession, said blanks being narrowed and widened in the knitting operation to provide a narrow sole connecting wider heel and toe portions.
5. Hosiery comprising a leg section, a knitted foot section secured thereto, said foot section being fashioned in the knitting to provide a fashioned heel, a fashioned toe, and a narrow sole portion between said heel and toe, the wales of the sole portion providing the middle parts of the heel and toe portions.
6. Hosiery comprising a net leg and instep, a knitted welt seamed to the top of the leg, and a fashioned foot seamed to said leg and instep, said foot comprising a fashioned heel, a fashioned toe, and a sole portion knitted integrally with said heel and toe, the middle Wales of the sole portion extending through the middle part of the toe portion and the heel portion.
7. A fashioned foot blank for a stocking, said blank comprising heel, sole and toe portions having selvaged side edges, the wales at the middle of the sole portion extending through the middle of the heel and toe portions.
8. A knitted stocking foot blank shaped in the knitting operation, said blank having parallelsided portions merging smoothly into Wider and narrower portions Without reentrant angles, and said blank comprising heel, sole and toe portions, the middle wales of the sole portion extending through the middle of the heel and toe portions.
