Further objects and advantages of my invention, and objects relating to details of construction and arrangement of the parts thereof will be readily apparent in the course of the detailed description to follow.

The accompanying drawings illustrate by way of example several forms in which my invention may be embodied, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a human foot having the sock shown thereon embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a partial plan view of Fig. 1.

Referring to said views, wherein similar reference characters indicate like parts in the several views, the reference numeral 1 indicates the foot portion of a sock embodying my invention and 2 the leg portion thereof. The socks contemplated in my invention are formed of the usual knitted fabric upon the specialized machines usually employed in the knitting of hosiery. In the present example the leg portion and the heel 3 are constructed in the usual or any suitable-manner. At or about the instep of the foot, as at 5, upon each side of the sock a plurality of needles are successively added to the machine forming the sock to afford a graduated enlargement in the width of the sock at or about that portion agreeing with the ball or widest portion of the foot leaving a circular knitted edge 4.

Upon another machine a flat piece 6 of knitted fabric is made having at its base 7 approximately the same number of knitted stitches as are comprised in the circular edge 4: of the sock-foot at or about the middle port-ion of said piece 16 and toward its outer periphery 8 the number of needles forming said piece are reduced to shape such piece in slightly rounded form, asat 9. The piece 6 is joined to the circular sock portion of the foot by the operation known as looping joining the edges 4 to the base edges 7 of the piece 6 with that portion of said piece 6 in line with the reduced portion 9 thereof upon one side of the sock which will correspond to the inside of the foot of the wearer adjacent the big toe. The sock end is then completed by joining the edges 8 and the side portion thereof 10 in a horizontal line by a sewed or other seam 11. Said toe piece 6 is reversely mounted in the socksof each pair so that they comprise rights and lefts.

It will thus be seen that a hygienic sock is produced substantially anatomically correct afford-ing sufficient fullness upon the ball of the foot to accommodate theextra width thereat and thence forward toward the toeend of the sock retracting sufficiently to adapt itselfto the narrowing configuration of the a foot across the toes without leaving any undue fullness to form wrinkles and terminating in a toe end slightly rounded but broad enough to accommodate all of the toes in their natural position without restriction and without surplus of material to form wrinkles and folds.
