Areas 28 and 30 are preferably knit so as to present an attractive simulation of an after Welt.
ABSTRACT 6F THE DISCLOSURE Below areas 28 and 30 I knit a narrow band 34 of lace, 0 or non-run stitch, to prevent any run developing in the welt from extending into the leg.
While in the preferred embodiment I place areas 28 and 30 in the lower portion of the welt, it is within the scope of this invention to place the high-stretch-high recovery areas at the top of the welt, as shown in FIG. 3, or elsewhere in the body of the welt.
A stocking welt constructed as shown in FIG. 1, will, after repeated washings, provide ample stretch at the knee when the leg is bent, and by completely recovering it main- A stocking double welt having registering portions 1 thereof knit of conventional plain loops under normal tension and other registering portions knit of high stretch yarn under increased tension to permit adequate stretching and adequate recovery.
My invention relates to a stocking and it relates more particularly to improvements in the construction of the welt.

develop.
Ample stretching is essential to permit comfortable Walking and squatting, or bending, in which posture the leg is doubled up, and it is essential to the durability of the stocking.
When placed at the top of the welt or at some intermediate position, areas 28 and 30 provide for ample stretching and their large recovering capacity serves as a support A still further ob ect 18 to produce a stocking Wl'llCl'l 30 and helps uphold the hose on theleg.
has no after welt but which presents the appearance of Since, except as pointed out, the structure of FIG 3 is having the same as that of FIG. 1, the parts of FIG. 3 have been These and other Object? are i by my invention designated with the prime of the numbers used in FIG. 1. as set forth in the following specification and as shown WhatI Claim is:
on the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a highly diagrammatic side elevational view of a stocking embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 is a highly diagrammatic sectional view of the same.
FIG. 3 is a highly diagrammatic side elevational View 40 of the upper portion of the welt showing a slightly modified construction.
In the drawing, 10 designates a stocking having a welt 12, a leg 14, a heel 16, a foot 18, and a toe 20. The leg, 0 heel foot and toe form no Part of this invention, and 2. The stockin defined 1n claim lwherein said registertherefore their structure is not shown nor described. ing Portions are disposedimmediately above the lower end The welt shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 is formed of an of sald Welt inner ply 22 and an outer ply 24, with the free edge of outer ply 24 knitted in with the inner ply as at 26,
A further object is to produce a welt construction wherein the welt stretches longitudinally and radially, and wherein the stretchability and the ability to recover from the stretched state, are greatly increased.
A still further object is to produce an improved stocking which includes a runguard area intermediate the welt and the top of the leg.
1. A stocking welt comprising an inner ply and an outer ply transversely registering areas of which are knit of plain loops and under tension of a first value,
other transversely registering areas of said plies being knit of plain loops of high stretch yarn and under tension of a second value greater than said first value, and
a runguard connecting said welt to the upper end of the leg of the stocking.
