This invention relates to hosiery, and more particularly is directed to an improved construction of the open end portions of stockings and socks for womens, mens or childrens wear.

One object of the invention is to provide in hosiery of the character described an improved construction of the 0 en end portions thereof comprising novel orms of removable members extending beyond the normal lengths of the stockings or socks, said members serving as means to cover upper portions of the wearers limbs which may be exposed or left uncovered by the undergarment, and

also to protect against chafing or other po sible discomfort caused by usual hosiery supports.

Another object of the invention is to provide in hosiery of the character described, members of improved construction extending beyond the normal lengths of the stockings or socks, said members being integrally knitted or permanently secured in position yet being easily detached for readily converting the stockings or socks into hosiery of normal lengths.

A further object of the invention is to provide improved hosiery of the character described comprising few and simple parts apparel, which shall be cheap to manufacture, readily conformed to various desired styles and dress fashions, and practical to a high degree in use. Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the constructions hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,

Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of the hemmed open end portion of a stocking constructed to embody the invention,

forming neat appearing, novelty, wearing showing the extension member in position to cover the upper part of the wearers limbs and toprotect the latter from the hose support eliminating possible chafing or discomfortto the wearer.

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the open end portion of the stocking shown in Fig. 1 before being hemmed.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of a modified construction of the invention in which the open end portion of the stocking is made without a hem.

Fig. 4 is'a front elevational view of sock constructed to embody the invention.

Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailed view of a knitted means for connecting the extension member to a non-ravelling portion of the open end of hosiery, said means being shown partially withdrawn for removing said member, and

Fig. 6 is an enlarged view of the sewed means for connecting the extension member to an open end portion of knitted hosiery, said means being shown partially severed for removing said member and providing a non-ravelling edge on the remaining hosiery structure.

Referring in detail to the drawing, H denotes a stocking or sock embodying the invention, only a fragmentary part including so the open end portion 10 thereof being shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

Said stocking or sock may be made of any suitable material, as for example, wool, cotton, natural or artificial silk or other textile products and is preferably formed of a knitted fabric of said materials being full-fashioned, or circular knitted or otherwise constructed in any well understood manner.

Said portions 10, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, may be integrally knitted to form a continuation of the leg portion 11' of the hosier which is adapted to cover the wearers lim below the knee.

To conform with the present mode and style, the leg portion 11 may be knitted of silk yarn whereas the continuation portion 10 may be knitted of either silk or cotton yarn.

As here shown, said portion 10 is formed of a cotton knitted fabric and is folded along a line 12 extending through the middle of said portion 10 transverse the length thereof, and rovides a relatively wide hem 13, the latter bein secured by a row of knitted loops or stitc es 14 in the well understood manner.

A dominant feature of the invention is to rovide as part of the portion 10, a memr 15 extending upwardly from the hem 13, said member 15 and the material formin the hem 13 may form a continuous knitted structure interconnected by a pull thread course of knitted loops or stitches 16. Preferably the edge course of knitted loops or stitches 13 of the hem which interlock with the knitted 100 s or stitches 16 are made with non-ravelling nished edge.

The member 15 extends from the hem 13 up beyond the fold line 12, the latter forming the open end of the hosieryl and normally corresponds to finished lengt of the hosiery.

The practical application of the invention will now be apparent. After constructing a stocking as described above and shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the member 15 ma be extended 5 beyond the normally finished ength of the stocking to serve as an additional covering for the upper portion of the wearers limb which may otherwise be left exposed or uncovered by the undergarments. Said member 15 then is positioned to underlie the hose support 20 which is secured to the hem 13. Said member 15 thus rotects the wearer against chafing or other iscomforts that may be caused by said supports contacting with the wearers body. The member 15 may also, if desired, be folded over the hem 13, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, to provide a end. The latter reinforces the material of the stocking hem at the connection with the hose supports so as to withstand the severe strains to which said hem material is subjected and thereby eliminates runs in knitted structure below said hem.

By providin the member 15 in a stocking construction, t e amount of material at the open end portion thereof is increased thereby facilitating the securin of the stocking in position by rolling said hem end portion and member to permit dispensing with the hose supports in the well understood manner (not shown).

To convert the improved stockin into one of normal length, the pull threa knitted loops or stitches 16 are withdrawn from the knitted structure, as shown in Fig. 5, or severed and the member 15 removed.

In Fig. 3 a modified construction of the invention is shown. Here the open end por tion 110 of the stocking is made without a hem. The material of said portion at line 112 corresponding to the normal length of the stocking may be provided with one or more course of stitches 113 forming a non-ravelling or finishing edge and the extension member 115 knitted as a continuation, the pull struction in stockings is a apted particularly to form thigh length convertible hosiery for costume and theatrical dress wear.

In Fig. 4 is shown a sock .S constructed with a hemless open end structure 210, the latter having a removable extension member 215 connected by a pull thread knitted loops or stitches 216 in the manner similar to that shown in Fi 3 and described above.

It is to be understood that the improved

16, 116 and 216, respectively, described above, as for example, by providing a hemstitch connection 316. See Fig. 6. In the latter case the hemstitching 316 is severed to remove the member 315 from the leg portion 311 of the hosiery.

Where a hemstitched connection is provided the non-ravelling finishing edge stitches may be eliminated since the severed hem stitched structure forms a picot finishing edge 316" which prevents the unravelling of the knitted fabric at the free severed edge.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matters herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing are to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. 7

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters into different desired lengths and formed at the open end thereof with a fabricated structure, said structure having a non-ravelling finished portion and making the stockin of one desired length, said structure-exten ing beyond another desired length and being connected thereto by a readily removable means so that the removal of said means leaves the stocking at the last mentioned desired length with a non-ravelling finished ed e at the open end thereof, said readily remova le means being applied during the manufacture of said stocking.
