REENFORCED HOSIERY.

Be it known that I, LAWRENCE J. MiRsKr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reenforced Hosiery, of which the following is a specication.

This application is a continuation in part of my copending application, Serial Number 620,736, filed February 23, 1923, and the invention herein relates to improvements in reenforced hosiery, and more particularly to hosiery having reenforced heel and toe portions, the reenforced toe portion whereof has, in addition to the ordinary reenforcement, an area of increased reenforcement knit integrally therewith adjacent the large toe of the wearer, the said area being less than that of the ordinary reenforcement and extending short of the line of looping said reenforced portion to the foot of the stocking or sock, for the purpose to be hereinafter described.

In hosiery now in common use, and particularly silk hosiery, it is customary to reenforce the toe and heel portions by doubling the thread in these sections. While this form of reenforcement gives added life and durability to the stocking, yet the wearing qualities of hosiery, particularly silk hosiery, is far from satisfactory. It has been found impractical to treble the thread in the abovementioned portions of the stocking for the reason that these portions are looped during the process of manufacture and the joint or seam would become hunched, two threads heretofore being the maximum number which could be used in the looped portions without bunching resulting.

It is, therefore, one of the objects of the present invention to provide, in addition to the ordinary reenforcement of hosiery, a further reenforced area, particularly at the foot of the stocking, knit as an integral part of the toe, but of smaller area than said reenforcement so that the area of the increased reenforcement approaches, but does not reach, the line of looping, that is, the line of joining the toe portion to the foot portion of the stocking.

A further object of the invention is to provide hosiery having a multiple thread construction at the heel and toe portions, but so constructed that said multiple thread area Serial No. 711,747.

in the toe portion will not interfere with the looping thereof or cause bunching.

A further object of the invention is to provide hosiery having a multiple thread construction at the point in the hosiery where the large toe of the wearer engages the same, for the reason that experience has shown this to be the most vulnerable portion of the stocking, thereby making the stocking less expensive to manufacture than if the entire foot had a multiple thread construction.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved reenforced sock or stocking as shown more particularly in the drawing, 'in Which- Figure l is a side view of the improved reenforced sock or stocking;

Figure 3 is an enlarged diagrammatic de tail view showing the knit employed in mak ing the reenforced portion of the sock or stocking.

Referring to the drawings The numeral 5 represents a stocking having the usual leg portion 6 and foot 7. In knitting stockings it is customary to manufacture the same with a lower foot portion as indicated by the numeral 8. Said foot portion is formed with a reenforced toe portion 9 of double thread as shown in Figures 2 and 3, and the foot portion is joined to the upper portion 7 by splicing along the line 10.

It is to be understood that I do not confine the application of my invention to split foot hosier f, the showing made in Figures 1 and 2 of t e drawing being merely for the purpose of illustration.

The portion of the stocking which normally wears out first is the part adjacent the large toe of the wearer, and the present invention contemplates, particularly, giving added reenforcement to the aforementioned portion of a stocking. Said reenforcing of the toe of the stocking is accomplished by knitting, as an integral part of the stocking, an area of multiple threads 11 positioned so as to cover the large toe of the wearer. The ordinary reenforcement 9 at the toe of the stockin which forms a part of the foot portion t ereof, is brought up and fastened to the upper part of the foot llO portion of the stocking by looping along the line 12. If, however, still another reenforcing area forms a part of the toe portion of the stocking and extends to the line of looping, there results a bunching of the material of the stocking at such line of looping. Such a stocking is uncomfortable and therefore impractical to manufacture. Accordingly, it is a primar feature of the present invention to provi e an added reenforcement, so that such added reenforcelnent will not extend to the line 12 of joining or looping, and consequently the added reenforcemcnt can be had Without sacrice to the wearers comfort. To ive added strength to the heel of the stoc ting, a similar area of multiple threads 13 is provided.

Figure 3 is a somewhat exaggerated view to more fully show the knit of the improved reenforced stocking. The numeral 8 shows the foot portion having but a single ply of thread, and this is joined by the ordinary reenforced portion 9 in Figure 2, formed of two threads, with the small area havin the treble thread construction 11.

It s iould be understood, that in the improved reenforced hosiery, silk, cotton, Wool,

or any form of thread or yarn can be used to equal advantage, and the invention can be applied to mens, womens, childrens, or infants hosiery.

From the foregoing description, it will bc seen that the improved reenforced stocking is of simple construction, is strongly reenforced at the most essential portions thereof, and is well adapted for the purpose described.

Hai'ing described my invention what I claim is:

As an article of manufacture, a stocking having a rccnforccd toe portion, said reenforccd toe portion extending entirely around the foot thereof; a line of looping adjacent the toe portion; a further reenforced area knit into said first-named reenforced portion and forming a single ply therewith, said additional reenforcement lying entirely Within, and being smaller than said firstnamed reenforcement, said additional reenforcement falling short of the line of looping the first-named reenforcement with the foot of the stocking.
