Abstract
557,629. Knitting. BOOTON, Ltd., W. E., BOOTON, W. E., and WITTS, H. May 25, 1942, No. 7081. [Class 74 (ii)] A blank for a stocking or like article knitted upon a circular machine has the leg fashioned by introducing needles to produce an upwardly converging gap in the tubular fabric made by rotary knitting, and heel parts h united at their ends to the fabric at the back of the leg and to the foot bottom and formed by knitting on two spaced groups HN of needles while temporarily holding the intervening instep needles IN inoperative. The blank is knitted starting at the top. The heel flaps h may be knitted by rotary knitting, or to avoid long floats, they may be knitted by reciprocatory knitting. To form a good selvedge during reciprocatory knitting, the inner end needle of each line group may be temporarily elevated so that the thread wraps about it. The blank may be knitted upon a two-feeder machine having a group of leg-fashioning needles FN and a group of instep needles IN disposed over substantially diametrically opposed parts of the needle circle, and two groups of heel needles HN disposed between the groups of leg-fashioning and instep needles.
