596,388. Knitting. HEMPHILL CO. Jan. 4, 1945, No. 360. Convention date, Jan. 4,1944 [Class 74 (ii)] A stocking or like article of hosiery comprises the combination of a circularly knit sheer leg 2 of nylon yarn, permanently fashioned to fit the contour of the leg to a degree substantially equalling that of fully-fashioned hosiery, a reciprocatorily knit foot whereof the instep 3 is of sheer nylon yarn and whereof the sole comprises a softer, more absorbent yarn arranged to be in direct contact with the foot, and true knitted suture seams joining the instep and the sole. The leg and instep are preferably knitted from the same continuous nylon yarn and the high heel 4, heel 5, cradle sole 6 and toe 7 are knitted from another softer and more absorbent yarn. All the portions below the top of the high heel, and excepting the ring-toe, are produced by reciprocatory knitting. The sole may be of cotton, lisle, cellulosic rayon or other relatively softer and more absorbent yarn. In the high heel and sole, a nylon and a softer yarn may be plated, with the cotton on the inside, so that the stocking appears to be of nylon yarn throughout. Tapered high-heel, narrow sole, cradle sole or buffer heel and toe can be provided.
