A sheer knitted stocking has an area of crepe appearance characterized by loops of different sizes and shapes and of random distribution resulting from its being knitted from at least one permanently crinkled yarn and at least one plain (i.e. smooth, uncrinkled) yarn. The stockings may be fully fashioned or multifeed circular knit. Courses 14 of plain yarn may alternate with courses 16 of a crinkled yarn, or pairs of courses of plain yarn with single courses of crinkled yarn, or single courses of plain yarn with pairs of courses of crinkled yarn, or pairs of courses of plain yarn with pairs of courses of crinkled yarn. Crinkles 18 show up as irregularities in the loops. At 20 are indicated loops of crinkled yarn displaced out of the average surface of the fabric, to produce overlaps of portions of the loops. The plain loops are also displaced, as at 22, out of walewise alignment. The fabrics may be used in the sheer parts (e.g. leg and instep) of a stocking and in the heavier parts (e.g. high splice, heel, toe, reinforced sole or welt). In circular knit stockings, nylon plain yarn is preferably used in the leg, whilst, in the welt, or shadow welt, the plain yarn is of preshrunk nylon or of a material not subject to shrinkage in the subsequent boarding operation. The yarns may be monofilament or multifilament and the plain yarns may be of silk, rayon, or the like. Specifications 651,961, 662,347 and 676,522 are referred to.
