Abstract

661,263. Knitting. HEMPHILL CO. Nov. 19, 1946 [Dec. 8, 1945], No. 34252/46. Class 74 (ii). In a two-wale suture (e.g. split foot suture of Fig. 1) one wale is composed of two courses of one yarn and two courses of another yarn, in alternation; and the other wale of two courses of the first yarn in alternation with one course of the other yarn. Fig. 2 shows such suture formation (as in parallel-sided parts 3 and 39). Course A is knitted from right to left. On the return stroke (course B), needles 9 and 8 first draw loops 10, 11, of sole yarn; needle 9 is then raised to join the long butt group before reaching knitting cams at the auxiliary side and, on that same stroke also draws loop 12 of instep yarn through loop 10. Before beginning the succeeding stroke (course C) needles 8 and 9 are both raised into the long butt group; they thus draw loops 13, 14 of instep yarn on that stroke and they are then brought down to rejoin the short butt needles drawing, on the same stroke of the machine, loops 15, 16 of the sole yarn. This cycle is repeated. Fig. 3 shows suture formation whilst the sole is being widened (portions 5 and 40). Course E is knitted from right to left and course F from left to right, needle 19 being made, on the second stroke, to draw loops 18, 20 of sole and instep yarns. On the next stroke (course G) needle 19 is made to draw, first loop 21 of instep yarn and then loop 23 of sole yarn; and, when it is lowered to the short butt group to draw loop 23, needle 22 (which has drawn loop 25) is lowered with it to draw also loop 24 of sole yarn. The sole is thus widened by one needle wale and the cycle is repeated commencing with course H. In a modification, Fig. 5, needle 19 is raised, in course M, corresponding to course F, into the long butt group so that it takes the sole yarn round its shank, but does not knit it, with the result that it knits loop 20 of the instep yarn through loop 17 of the sole yarn and through an unknitted bight 38 thereof. Fig. 4 shows suture formation in the portion 4, where the sole is being narrowed. Course I is knitted from right to left. On the return stroke (course J) needle 28 is made to take a bight of sole yarn round its shank, but not to knit it, and then to knit a loop 31 of instep yarn through this bight and through the sole yarn loop 27. On the next stroke (course K) needles 32, 29 knit, first loops 34, 35 of instep yarn and then loops 36, 37 of sole yarn. The cycle recommences with course L, corresponding to course J. Specification 661,275 is referred to.
