Abstract

1, 033, 309. Knitting machines. M. S. MORETTA. Nov. 26, 1963 [Nov. 30, 1962],No. 46585/63. Addition to 940, 708. Headings D1C and D1K. In a knitting machine as set out in the parent Specification for knitting a double outwardly turned welt, a cam surface 32m maintains the needles below the level of the thread feed and a cam 30m is positioned to raise either the needles with long butts or all the needles to thread feed level. A drum 12, Fig. 1 (not shown) arranged coaxially with the needle cylinder 1 carries cams to control the operation of the machine including cam 100 which engages rod 101 to lift the needle cylinder and sinker ring 2 without disengaging the drive. The sinkers 5 have two operative levels 16, 17, separated by a nib 18, and butts 23. The needle cams are carried in a stationary cam lock 15 and the stitch cam 27 has an extension 29 to increase the draw of all the needles, only those with long butts or no needles. Cam 29 is operated through a linkage by a projection 36 with two steps on drum 12 Fig. 7 (not shown). The ring 32m raises the needles but not sufficiently for them to receive yarn or to clear the loops from the needle latches their hooks lying substantially at the same height as the upper level of the sinkers. Cam 30m raises the needles with long butts or all the needles to clearing level and is operated similarly to cam 29. A cam 49, which increases the withdrawal of the sinkers, is operated through a linkage by projections 59 on drum 12 Fig. 6 (not shown). In operation, for first course A cam 29 operates for all needles while cam 30m operates only on needles with long butts and these take yarn from the thread guide and sinker, cam 49 is operative so that the stitches are formed on the lower level 16 of the sinkers 5. For the second and third courses B, B1 cam 30m acts on all needles and normal knitting takes place at level 16. Course C is formed with cam 29 operating on the long-butt needles and cam 30m operative on all needles so that the stitches are formed at level 17 cam 29 causes the long butt needles to knock their loops over the corresponding loop in the course B1 whereas the short-butt needles in this course form stitches at level 17 without knocking over the stitches lying at level 16. These lower stitches are retained on these needles until the turned welt is being completed. Course C1 may be knitted identically with course C. For following course D, cam 30m operates only on the long butted needles and the short butted needles are not raised to yarn receiving position. Cam 27 lowers all the needles, the needles with the long butts pulling the new thread downwards while those with short butts pull on the thread of the previous course. This may alternatively be achieved by raising the needle cylinder by means of cam 100. In course E, cam 29 is rendered inoperative and cam 30m operates fully so that all needles are raised to clear the latches and knitting then takes place on all needles at level 17, until the welt is complete, when the loops held at level 16 must be knitted in e.g. by reinserting cams 29 and 49.
