Abstract

1,090,953. Knitting-machines. BENTLEY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Aug. 17. 1964 [Sept. 5, 1963], No. 35143/63. Heading D1C. A circular machine has needle selecting mechanism comprising selector jacks 4 and intermediate jacks 3a which are actuated to raise the selected needles to a height whereby they take a splicing yarn from a guide 13 in addition to the ground yarn from a guide 10. Subsequently the needles are lowered by stitch cam 14 and the intermediate jacks 3a are lowered by cam 15. A cam 16 is positioned beneath the butts of the jacks 3a which is adapted to be engaged by these butts when in their lowered position and is thereby caused to be moved downwardly. The cam 16 is coupled through linkwork with the stitch cam 14 such that its downward movement causes the stitch cam 14 to be simultaneously lowered. Therefore, the jacks 3a having raised the splicing needles cause these same needles to draw longer loops by the lowering of the stitch cam. The stitch cam and cam 16 are normally biassed in an upward direction so that after the splicing needles have knitted their stitches the cams resume their normal position. To avoid the marginal needles of the urispliced area being lowered to draw long loops, the cam 16 may be pivoted such that the initial jack butts tilt the cam 16 without lowering it as shown in Fig. 7. Lowering is effected when the cam is engaged throughout by the butts as is shown in Fig. 8 whilst the cam resumes it normal position by the end jacks tilting the cam in its reverse direction, Fig. 9, prior to the completion of knitting by the splicing needles.
