Abstract

927,677. Knitting. SCOTT & WILLIAMS Inc. April 21, 1961 [May 4, 1960], No. 14554/61. Class 74 (2). A multi-feed circular knitting machine comprising pattern controlling means for varying the relationship between the needles 6 and the stitch producing elements 12 which co-operate therewith, wherein, associated with each feed, is a member which can be latched in a series of positions in each of which a different set of pattern elements thereon controls elements individually associated with the needles. As shown, latch needles 6 slide in slots 4 of a rotary cylinder 2, the needle butts 10 being engaged by stitch cams 12 to lower the needles and their jacks 14. The downward movement of each jack is limited by the engagement of shoulder 18 with a spring band 20. Removable cams 24 hold the jacks with the edges 22 of their parts 22, 23 sliding on the bottom of the slot while lower parts 28, 30 diverge from the bottom of the slot, shoulders 32, 34 being provided at the lower end of the jack. Engaging the edge 30 of each jack is the edge 60 of a presser 44 having a series of butts 50 which can be broken off according to the pattern required. Fixed cams 58 hold presses 44 so that the lower ends of the jacks are always slightly flexed inwardly. Associated with each feed is an adjustable assembly 62 which carries the cams 36 and 58 for that feed, and has a portion 64 with horizontal guide ways for slides 66 corresponding to the butt levels of the pressers 44. Each slide has a cam extension 70 which engages the corresponding butt 50 and is biased outwardly by a tension spring 71 so that its outer end 68 engages corresponding butts of the two pattern elements 90 and 92 (not shown) carried in a vertical slot 89 in a tuck wheel 76. The base 78 of wheel 76 has sockets 80, one corresponding to each of the slots 89, which are engaged by the nose of a manually operated spring-biased plunger 82 to secure the wheel in position. The combination of butts 50 and the butts of elements 90 operates on the jacks when lowered either to leave them in their normal position or push them in to a lesser or greater extent. When the jacks are in their normal position shoulder 34 will project the maximum amount permitted by cam 58 and engages notch 40 in cam 36 so that the cam rise 42 will lift the jack to clear the loop and form a plain stitch. When the jack is pushed in to the smaller extent, shoulder 32 will engage 42 and the needle will only be raised to tuck level. If the jack is moved fully inwards, shoulders 32, 34 both miss edge 42 and the needle is not raised sufficiently to tuck so that a float is formed. A fabric with tucks T and floats F, such as shown in Fig. 8, may be produced.
