Abstract

In a circular knitting machine with multibutt needles, a raise cam 12 engages first butts 18 to raise the needles 20 which are selected by a pattern wheel 26 which engages second butts on the selected needles and raises these needles further before they reach a stitch cam 16 and a bolt cam 24 forms a guard cam for raise cam 12 and also limits the upward movement of needles between cams 12 and 16. As shown, in a cam block 10 are provided raise cam 12, manually adjustable cam 14, which can wipe out all welt and tuck selections or all welt selections as required, cam 16 and the pattern wheel 26 rotatable at an angle to engage butts 34 of the needles. A spring biassed wing cam 25 is provided under cam 16. Slots in the pattern wheel contain high or low jacks (38), (40), Fig. 1 (not shown) or no jacks according to whether the corresponding needles are to be raised to knit or tuck height and then engaged by stitch cam 16 or left at welt height and then engaged by cam 25. Cam 24 is carried on a shaft 58 and is spring biassed to normal position and is retractable by pulling a knob 62 on shaft 58 which enables the needles and hence butts 34 to be raised so that the timing slot of the pattern wheel can be aligned with the starting needle when the machine is being set up. Damaged needles can be readily removed.
