A flat-bed machine, for example a parallel bed machine, is provided with means for holding down the loops on the needles as the needles are advanced prior to receiving the yarn from a yarn guide and also for holding the loops down after the knitting of a course when the needles are again slightly elevated. In one example the means comprises two wire members 49, 50 each secured to the cam lock of the machine and each adapted to be pivotally swung at the commencement of each traverse of the lock so as to bring an extended portion 49b, 50b into or out of an operative position alternatively depending on the direction of movement of the lock. This portion 49b, 50b serves to hold the loops on the needles down as the needles are advanced to receive yarn from a guide prior to knitting the yarn and as illustrated by the portion 49b in Fig. 1. The wire members also have a looped portion 49d, 50d which is effective in pressing down on the loops extending between the needles of a parallel bed machine in both directions of traverse of the cam lock save that in one direction the portion 49d, 50d serves to pass the loops down prior to the needles being raised to receive a yarn for knitting as illustrated by the portion 49d in Fig. 1 and in the other direction serves to press the loops down after the yarn has been knitted as is illustrated by the portion 50d in the Figure. Instead of the portion 49d, 50d there may be provided a plate which is pressed resiliently against the loops extending between the needles of each bed or, alternatively, a wheel mounted on an arm which is urged downwardly by a spring to press the wheel against the loops.
