Abstract

1288043 Knitting-machines COURTAULDS Ltd 7 Nov 1969 [8 Nov 1968] 52942/68 Heading D1C A flat 'V' bed knitting machine has two opposed arrays of latch needles in needle beds and includes a carrier mounted above and movable longitudinally of the beds, a supporting member extending downwardly from the carrier and two hold down elements mounted on the supporting member and projecting away from each other in opposite directions the supporting member being movably mounted on the carrier so that either hold down element can be brought into action the arrangement being such that the hold down element presses down the work prior to the advance of the needles as they rise to take the yarn for stitch forming. In Fig. 1 the hold down elements 20 are shown in their position relative to the cams of the machine. The hold down elements may be circular cross section with a tapered end 37 or formed of flat strip and the trailing end is located against the fabric on the needles between the beds at the closest point of approach of the beds. As shown in Fig. I the hold down elements are for use in movement of the cam carriage towards the left hand side of the figure. The location of the hold down element relative to the needle beds is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. It is located between the needle beds and leaves a sufficient gap on either side to allow the fabric to pass. In Figure 4 there is shown an arrangement in which reversible hold down members 61-64 are provided on pivoted arms 59, 60. These arms are pivoted on a plate 69 which depend from side plates 40, 41 secured to bridges 42, 43 between the cam boxes. Parts 64, 62 of the hold down elements are operative as the machine moves to the right as shown in Fig. 4 and parts 61, 63 in the reverse direction. In order to reverse the position of arms 59, 60 and hence bring into operation different parts of the hold down elements on slider 44 is provided and has abutments 81, 82 which strike end stops as at 83 before the cam carriage finishes its traverse. This striking action causes relative movement between the slider 44 and the cam carriage and side parts 40, 41. A rack 47 on the slider causes rotation of pinions 48, 49 and thus movement of a further slider 51 which carries pins 57, 58 which in turn engage the forked ends of rods 59, 60 thus causing them to rotate and change the operative position of the hold down elements.
