Abstract

526,120. Knitting. HEMPHILL CO. March 8, 1939, No. 7547. Convention date, March 9, 1938. [Class 74 (ii)] A machine for knitting fabrics having pile loop areas is provided with sinkers over which pile loops of different length can be 'drawn and with patterning means for selectively positioning the sinkers to draw the different length pile loops. The entire area of fabric may have pile loops 168, 169, 170, 171 of different lengths in which case, due to the sinker movement in forming the pile loops, the whole fabric is reverse-plated, or alternatively part only of the fabric may be provided with pile loops, the reverse-plated pile loops .appearing on the same face as the loops of ordinary length formed from the same yarn 160. If the yarn 160 is of silk of a greater lustre than the other yarn 159, the reverse face of the fabric will have a watered or moire effect. The sinkers 26 are provided with a nib 38 over which long pile loops are formed, a throat 39 receiving the ground .yarn, and a notch 40 over which shorter pile loops are formed. Patterning jacks 43 are provided below the outer ends of the sinkers, so that selected sinkers can be raised so that butts 42 thereon are brought into the range of an upper cam 75. The cam 75 and a cam 76 immediately beneath it are movable by hand into positions such that the sinkers can be actuated so that either both yarns 159, 160 are taken in the throat 39, or some sinkers take the pile yarn 160 upon the nib 38 while the ground yarn is taken in the throat 39 and at the same time the remaining sinkers take the pile yarn in the notch 40, or alternatively the pile yarn is taken by all sinkers either in the notch 40 or upon the nib 39. The upwardly projecting butt 42 of the sinker may be notched as at 44 so that it can be held by a knife-edge cam in its raised position and the nib 39 may be notched as at 153, Fig. 7. The sinkers may have butts 31 actuated by jacks arranged in the needle tricks so as to assist in the stitchdrawing as described in U.S.A. Specifications 2,090,500 and 2,104,231, and the needles may be selected for tuck or float work by patterning mechanism in the form of manually set plungers as described in Specification 444,044. The lower edge 128 of the yarn guide 125 for the ground and pile yarns is sharp and serves to open the needle latches, and drop wires 135, 136 serve to operate on electrical stop-motion of known form upon breakage of or undue slackness in either of the two yarns. Specifications 445,451, 447,370 and 493,589, also are referred to.
