Abstract
349,394. Knitting. HEMPHILL CO., Central Falls, Rhode Island, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Lawson, R. H. ; Pawtucket, and Cloutier, A. N. ; Lonsdale, both in Rhode Island, U.S.A.) Sept. 3, 1930, No. 26283. Convention date, May 14. (Class 74 (ii).] Relates to means for and a method of starting to knit a fabric, especially hosiery, on a circular knitting machine, and the resulting fabric structure. The old stocking having dropped off, the needle cylinder is rotated with bare needles preferably four times. The needles are then divided and a yarn finger 11 controlling two yarns is moved into feeding position. The division may be effected when each alternate needle groove is provided with a jack 12, by moving in a jack cam 16. The butts on the jacks corresponding to the short-butted needles are long and vice-versa. At the commencement of running-on the jacks are elevated and the correspondingly elevated needles take both yarns while the needles not elevated take only the lower yarn B. These yarns A<1> B are carried by the same finger 11, which is moved into feeding position as the cam 16 is moved inward. The front stitch cam 39 is moved out of action so that no needles are raised thereby, while alternate needles are raised by the cam 16. The yarn B is fed at such a low pont that the needles not having jacks are nevertheless at a high enough level to take yarn therefrom. F.g. 7 shows the terminal structure made. In the first three courses, alternate or other needles raised by jacks thereunder take both yarns A<1>, B and cast off old loops while the remainder take one yarn and do not cast off. The yarn A is thus floated behind the jackless needles, which cast off in the next course, forming tuck stitches. The yarn A is then withdrawn, another yarn C being substituted if desired and knitting then proceeds as usual. Specification 20101/09, [Class 74 (ii), Knitting &c.], is referred to.
