Abstract
809,261. Cigar-making machines. INTERNATIONAL CIGAR MACHINERY CO. June 29, 1956, No. 20237/56. Class 130. [Also in Group XVI] Tobacco sheet material W, Fig. 1, e.g. as disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 2,433,877, is drawn from a reel R obliquely across a rolling table 74 by an oscillating gripper 96 and has binder or wrapper portions severed therefrom by a knife 116 when the gripper 96 has released the drawn web and made or substantially made its return stroke. The gripper 96 has a suction head 98, Fig. 4, and is mounted on a hollow arm 90 of a hollow shaft 26 through which arm and shaft the suction is applied via a pipe 80 when a cam-actuated valve 58 connects it to a suction source 62 during forward strokes of the gripper 96, which thus acts on successive leading ends of the material W. At the end of each forward gripper stroke the valve 58 cuts off the gripper suction and applies suction via a tube 70 and the perforated top 76 of the table 74 to a perforated rolling apron 77 which grips the drawn material during the return gripper stroke. The knife 116 is mounted between the ends of arms 104 straddling the drawn material and both pivoted to a shaft 102 carried by extension arms 100 of the gripper 96 whilst one has an extension 106 with a roller 108 engaging a track 110 mounted adjustably at 114 so that on substantial completion of the gripper return stroke the knife 116 severs the drawn material, Fig. 4. The shaft 26 is oscillated from a cam 42 by linkage 36, 34, 28 and drives intermittently via a ball clutch 122 a gear 118 prevented from reverse movement by a spring- loaded pawl 124 and operating via gears 130, 132 a roller 136 rotating the reel R frictionally at material feed speed during gripper forward strokes. In a modification the gripper is formed by rollers 178, 180, Fig. 5, one of which may be of rubber, which do not rotate on the gripper forward stroke but run back over the drawn material on the gripper return stroke when a ball clutch 188, Fig. 7, allows a gear 194, on the gripper arm 176 and meshing a stationary segment 196, to actuate a gear 184 driving gears 182 on the roller spindles, a pawl 190 preventing reverse rotation of the gear 184. A V-shaped cutter 202 on a slidably mounted operating rod 200 is held against a ledger block 210 on the arm 176 by springs 208. During the gripper forward stroke, the cutter 202 is raised by a cam 240 on the shaft of the gear 194 and acting on a collar 238 on the rod 200, a spring-urged pivoted catch 224 then engaging under a further collar 216 on the rod 200 and retaining the cutter raised during the gripper return stroke until the catch is released by an adjustable trip 232 on the segment 196 and the cutter descends operatively under the action of a spring 220.
