Cigarette-making machines.-Tipped cigarettes cut from a continuous rod are separated into two lines before delivery to a conveyer band by one or more plungers which displace axially alternate cigarettes while travelling in pockets c in a wide rotary drum d, driven by worm gearing on the drum-shaft e. In the form shown in Fig. 2, every alternate pocket c contains a plunger g fixed to a rod h passing through the drum. A roller o fixed to the rod h bears against the edge of a fixed cam k which is so shaped as to displace the plunger g against the action of the spring l further into the pocket during rotation of the drum and thus push the contained cigarette to the other end of the pocket. The cigarettes are delivered through a guide a and a slide b to the drum. Fig. 5 illustrates a modification in which one plunger only is used. This is slidably mounted in a sleeve o on one arm of a bell-crank lever, the other arm p of which carries a stud q working in a cam groove in a rotating disc s, thereby causing a travel with the drum of the plunger g during operation, and a quick return. The axial movement of the plunger is synchronous with that of the cutting mechanism which severs two cigarettes at a time. A shield fitting close over the pockets prevents the cigarettes from falling out.
