Abstract
452,615. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO., 511, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A. Sept. 16, 1935, No. 25631. Convention date, June 22. [Class 130] Cigarettes C travelling lengthwise in a single line from a cigarette - making machine are displaced sideways by a member 12 rotatable about an axis above and transverse to the path of the cigarettes and having a surface adapted to effect a sustained displacement of the cigarettes on to a transverse delivery belt 7 in the plane of the surface 5 on which the cigarettes initially travel. As shown, the member 12 is a worm mounted on shaft 13 inclined so that the bottom portion of the helical groove of the worm is aligned with a cigarette, which enters the groove and is given a sustained displacement sideways on to the belt 7. The pitch of the helical groove is greatest at the receiving end of the worm in order to displace the cigarettes quickly sideways, and the worm may be single or double threaded. To separate the cigarettes axially before reaching the worm, they are accelerated by a rotating wheel 15, Fig. 3, having a raised segment the surface speed of which is greater than the speed at which the cigarettes travel along the surface 5. The wheel 15 delivers the cigarettes to a narrow endless belt 16 beneath the worm 12. When the cigarettes are displaced sideways by the worm, their forward movement is retarded and arrested by an endless belt 21 alongside the belt 16 and moving in the opposite direction, so that the cigarettes come to rest against a stop 26 forming an extension of the rear guide 11 of the belt 7.
