[Class 130.] Cigarettes with tobacco packed more closely at the ends than in the middle are cut from a continuous rod along which alternate rare and dense sections are formed by displace. ment. The denser parts are spaced apart a distance equal to one or two cigarettes. As shown in Fig. 3, paper 8 is fed from a reel 7 through a printer 9 and afterwards through a trough 5, where tobacco from a hopper 4 is deposited in a uniform layer on the paper. A tape 10 carries the loaded paper beneach a compression wheel 16 into a rodforming and gumming mechanisms 11, 12 and past a heater 13 to a cutting mechanism 14. Variations in density of the tobacco are produced in the rod (1) by rotating the compression wheel at a variable speed, or (2) by raking part of the tobacco backwards with pins 28, Fig. 7, actuated by a cam 29 and carried by the wheel 16. To ensure that the rod is cut at the points of maximum density the compression wheel and the cutting mechanism are driven in synchronism through gearing 21 .. 24.
