Abstract

1,146,259. Multiple tobacco smoke filters. BROWN & WILLIAMSON TOBACCO CORP. 3 Oct., 1967, No. 45057/67. Heading A2C. In an apparatus for the in-line assembly of components of at least three different characters to form composite cigarette mouthpiece rods each of which is divisible into mouthpieces having at least three filter sections, the three components 44, 48, 50 are fed by feeding stations 38, 40, 42 on to a suction conveyer band 78 travelling at a predetermined speed, the first and second components 44, 48 being fed at their respective stations 38, 40 at half said predetermined speed and the third component being fed at station 42 at the said predetermined speed. The feeding stations 38, 42 are constructed in similar manner to those present in the Molins D.A.P.T.C. machine (disclosed in Specification 915,203) but the station 40 differs in the construction and operation of its disc feeder 76. The feeder 76 includes cam actuated retractable fingers (84) that retract as soon as they have delivered a component 48 on to the band 78 so as to clear the plugs 44 passing it. The components 44, 48, 50 are subsequently abutted, wrapped and the continuous rod so formed is cut off in conventional manner to form quadruple length mouthpieces. As exemplified, the components 44, 48, 50 comprise double length paper, cellulose acetate and single length bonded charcoal elements respectively, the continuous rod formed being cut off through the centre of alternate double length components 44 to produce the quadruple length mouthpieces. The quadruple mouthpiece is then bisected through the now centrally placed double length component 44 to form double length mouthpieces each containing a paper element (20) on each end, two bonded charcoal elements 50 and a double length cellulose acetate component 48 in the centre. The double length mouthpieces are then united with two cigarettes and the resultant double length cigarette bisected through the centre of the remaining double length component 48 in conventional manner to form cigarettes having a three component filter mouthpiece. Other suitable granular material specified for the component 50 are alumina and silica gel.
