Abstract

514,186. Cigarette-making and like machines. MOLINS, D. W., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. April 29, 1938. No. 12891. [Class 130] A continuous rod of tobacco from which, after wrapping, cigarettes, tobacco cartridges or tobacco packages are severed, is formed by subjecting a stream of tobacco to a lengthwise compacting by reducing the speed of the tobacco while in a confining passage 5 and moving the compacted tobacco forwardly on a conveyer at a speed greater than the reduced speed but less than the speed at which the tobacco enters the passage. This increase in speed expands the filler sufficiently to prevent tobacco projecting from the ends of the wrapped cigarettes &c. The tobacco is fed, on a fast moving band 4, into the passage 5 which has a stationary top wall 6 and a bottom wall formed by a band 9 moving at a slower speed that the band 4, the compacted tobacco being received on a paper web 7. The tobacco on the band 4 may be compressed before entering the passage 5 by forming the band into U-shape and providing another band 16 above the band 4. The wall of the passage may diverge slightly towards the paper web 7. Specifications 324.379, [Class 130], 440,182, 465,177, [Group XVII], and 514,162 are referred to.
