967,176. Treating tobacco; cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Oct. 4, 1960 [Oct. 28, 1959], No. 34047/60. Heading A2C. A reconstituted tobacco web from a reel 10 is cut by knives 11 into ribbons subdivided by knives 16, 18 into rectangular sheets which fall on to a conveyer 20 the motion of which causes them to overlap and which delivers them to high speed coacting disc assemblies 26, 28 as described in Specification 938,951 which entrain between them air the action of which converts the sheets into shreds and packs the shreds into a tapered chamber 34 from which a conveyer 30 carrying a paper tape 32 transfers them to machinery comprising rod former 38, paste wheel 40, folder 42 and ironer 44 and wherein the tape is wrapped around them to form a continuous rod severed into cigarettes by a cut-off 48. Modifications. Instead of an initial web, individual side-by-side or superposed ribbons may be fed directly to the knives 16, 18, or a lengthwise folded web superposed ribbons may be fed directly to the assemblies 26, 28 to give continuous shreds. The reconstituted tobacco material used may have been previously creped, or may be creped immediately before its subdivision into sheets. The belt 20 may feed several cigarette making machines.
