Abstract

286,421. Legg, O. Jan, 26, 1927. Cutting tobacco.-The, machine comprises, in combination, means for conveying leaves from a receptacle to a first cutting point, a device for cutting the leaves into strips, means for transferring the strips to a second cutting point, and a device for cross-cutting the strips into short lengths. Leaves are placed in a receptacle 4, the bottom of which consists of an endless band 5 driven to feed the leaves against a rotating perforated drum 2. A funnel 13 inside the drum communicates with the inlet of a suction fan 11 by which the leaves are sucked against the drum, loose leaves being brushed off by a device 30. A number of rocking arms 16 each carry a rotary cutting blade 17 by which the leaves are cut into strips. The outlet 14 from the fan frees the strips from the drum, and they are directed by a scraper 21 to a ledger blade 22 surmounted by guide rollers 25. The strips are then cut into short lengths by a roller 26 with inserted rib cutters, and fall into a shoot 29. A travelling apron may be substituted for the drum 2, and a reciprocating knife for the roller 26. In a modification, the leaves may be conveyed between a pair of travelling aprons to a cutting device comprising a pair of intercalated male and female cutting rollers backed by a ledger blade.
