[Class 130] In mechanism for feeding tobacco to continuous rod machines, tobacco is delivered on to a travelling surface to form a carpet which is advanced to means adapted intermittently to sever sections from the leading edge of the carpet for delivery to the trough of the machine. In one form, Fig. 1, tobacco from a carded feed drum 11 is showered by a picker roll 12 upon a smooth feed drum 10, which may be of hard wood. A carpet or mat 14 of tobacco is formed on the drum 10 and sections severed from the leading edge by a reciprocating knife 15 fall upon a rotating worm 17 or a paddle wheel &c. by which they are showered into the trough 20. The worm may impart to the tobacco a movement having a forward component. The knife 15 co-operates with an abutment member 18 and a shield 19 may be provided to aid in retaining the carpet on the drum. In a modification, the tobacco may be divided, by partitions carried by the picker roll 12, into narrow streams forming narrow carpets on the drum 10, the carpets being severed by a series of short knives. In another form, Fig. 3, the tobacco is showered by the picker on a conveyer belt 25 which delivers it over a ledger plate 26 with which co-operates a rotary knife 27 to sever sections from the leading edge. An upper belt 33 and ledger plate 29 may be provided, forming a slot over which the knife passes, and the knife may have straight or helical blades. In a further modification, the severed sections of tobacco are delivered upon a belt conveyer from the end of which they are showered by a picker roll upon a cigarette-paper web or band.
