[Class 130.] Lengths of filter-tip material are deposited upon a travelling paper strip at spaced intervals, and tobacco is prevented from being deposited on the parts of the paper strip where the filter material is placed, or tobacco is removed from such parts of the strip before the filter tip is deposited on it. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the filter-tip material 7 is fed forward intermittently by rollers 9, and a portion is severed by a knife 10 and, after being pasted along its underside, is pressed upon the paper 5 by an endless belt 15 and rollers 16, 20. A slotted tube guides the tip from the rollers 9 to the belt 15. An endless belt 21, formed with slots 26 through which tobacco falls on to the paper 5, and with parts 27 between the slots which prevent the deposition of the tobacco on the paper at the positions where the filter tips lie on the paper, is driven by a sprocket wheel 22 at the same speed as the paper, beneath the outlet of the feeding hopper 1. The paper is then passed under a compression wheel 2, and through a former 3 to a cutting mechanism 4. The tobacco intercepted by the parts 27 is removed from the belt 21 by an inclined blade 28 or a revolving brush 29, and is deposited in a receptacle 30. A movable blade 31 placed beneath the band 21 prevents any intercepted tobacco from falling through the slots 26 and shears any loose tobacco strands. In a modification, the lengths of filter tip are deposited in spaces left in the tobacco on the paper 5. In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6, tobacco is continuously deposited on the paper 5 from the hopper 1, and at spaced intervals tobacco is removed from the strip and a filter tip deposited in the space left. A carriage 32 is reciprocated on a stationary member 33 by a cam and moves parallel with the paper strip. A slide 38 mounted on the carriage 32 carries a pin 39 which engages in a slot 40 in the member 33, so that the slide during the reciprocating movement of the carriage is reciprocated laterally. An extension 41 on the slide carries a spindle 43 on which is a brush 44, which at spaced intervals sweeps the tobacco off the paper strip 5. Discs 45 on the spindle 43 carry crank pins 46 which, by engaging stops 48, turn the brush through 90‹, so that on the return movement of the slide, the brush will clear the tobacco on the paper strip. At the end of the return movement of the slide, stops 49 engage the crank pins 46 and return the brush to its former position. The extension 41 carries flanges 53 which form an open trough behind the brush 44. The bottom of the trough is closed by a sliding plate 55 which, at the end of the forward movement of the slide 38, is withdrawn by a pin to deposit a length of filter tip on the paper strip 5. A spring 59 facilitates the deposition of the filter tip 12.
