789,766. Drinking straws. RABIN, S. F., SCISOREK, M., and BAYARD, J. Nov. 8, 1955, No. 31908/55. Class 14 (2). A drinking straw comprises a tubular body element having resilient side-walls, a self-sustaining elongated flavour-coated strip element positioned longitudinally in said body with portions in frictional engagement with corresponding opposed inner side walls of the body, one of the elements being held resiliently distorted by engagement with the other element whereby the strip is frictionally retained in the body. In operation of an apparatus for making the flavoured straws, straws 11 are fed from a hopper 15 to grooves 36 in feeder rolls 28. Detent mechanism 35 associated with a segmented gear drive 30, 31 intermittently rotates and aligns the grooves 36 with a knife channel 60 formed by a cutting edge 55 and a wall 59. A knife 54 cuts off strips 10 from flavoured sheet material 56 fed from a container 80, Fig. 2, not shown, by means of a chain-drive 83. The knife 54 remains spaced above the strip 10, thus providing a guide into which a finger 62 is rapidly reciprocated by links from a driven shaft 32. Strips are thereby moved into the grooves 36 in which a straw has been deposited, after being compressed by a stationary member 44 which partially extends into a groove 43 at one end of the roll 28. The finished straws are ejected from the grooves by finger 39. The strip may be coated with any additive it is desired to introduce into the liquid passing through the straw.
