533,207. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Oct. 18, 1939, No. 28161. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1938. Class 130] Tobacco feeding mechanism for use in the formation of dense-end cigarettes includes a travelling or rotor element 14, adapted to receive and advance successive charges of tobacco, and means for effecting compression of such charges during their advance and prior to their delivery in spaced relation upon a travelling web 13 for inclusion in a cigarette rod. In one form, Fig. 2, tobacco showered by a picker roller in a feed chute 12 is received by pockets 15 in the rotor 14 and conveyed past a presser roller 25 and a member 29 pivoted at 31 into position for delivery upon the web 13. A movable bottom wall 16 in each pocket is provided with a guide post 17 engaging a stationary ecentric or cam 19 in order to compress the tobacco charge during its travel and to expel it in the lower position. A knife 26 at the rear of each pocket co-operates with the roller 25 to sever loose ends of tobacco. The web 13 may receive the main charge of tobacco before or after receiving the charges from the pockets 15 and travels to the conventional continuous-rod forming &c. mechanism. The chute 12 may be provided with a rotary bladed wheel for throwing the tobacco downwards. In a modification, Fig. 3, pockets on the rotor 37 are formed by blades 40 pressed outwards by springs 45 and the tobacco is carried between the rotor and the fixed wall 41 of the casing. Lateral compression of the tobacco charge in each pocket is effected by an abutment 46 on an arm 47 on a shaft 48 carrying an arm 52 actuated by a cam 49, so that the abutment is withdrawn when the tobacco charge is in position for deposit on the web 13.
