Abstract

666,079. Cigarette-making machines. AMALGAMATED TOBACCO CORPORATION, Ltd., and TREBLE, F. R. March 21, 1950 [April 26, 1949; Aug. 23, 1949], Nos. 11084/49, and 21910/49. Class 130. [Also in Group XXX] Cigarette portions a and filter tips b are fed from a hopper 7 to grooves 10, 11 in a rotating drum 9, which has circumferential grooves 41 in which lie stripper arms 40 which guide the cigarettes and tips out of the grooves 10, 11 into a magazine 14; the cigarettes and tips are retained clear of the magazine floor by pads or springs 34 past which they are forced one at a time by cam-actuated fingers 28, 29, the aligned filter tip and cigarette portions being moved by a conveyor 45 into a garniture which forms a composite rod of alternate cigarette and filter tip portions. The number of grooves 11 is half that of the grooves 10 and the filter tips bare double the length required and are bisected by a rotary knife 17, one half being delivered into the magazine 14 and the other half onto a grooved member 19 from which it is moved sideways into the magazine by a cam-actuated plunger 20 after the first half has been moved down by the fingers 29. The conveyor 45 comprises a chain carrying pivoted fingers 48 which are held upright by a plate 52 to project through a slot in the magazine 14 to contact a filter tip portion and move it with its associated cigarette portion to the garniture. A segment 55 cut out of the side of the sprocket wheel 46 permits the members 48 to pivot backwards and disengage the filter tip as soon as they clear the plate 52. The pads 34 may be formed of transparent plastic material adjustably fastened to the side of the magazine 14 and positioned so that the cigarette engaged thereby just clears the cigarette on the floor of the magazine. The part of the magazine floor immediately preceding the cigarette may be recessed slightly so that the filter tip is lowered before engaging the cigarette to prevent the tip catching the cigarette held by the pads 34 and causing a jam. The pads 34 may be replaced by blade springs, and the conveyor 45 replaced by a continuously moving paper web which forms the wrapper of the composite rod. Specification 641,141 is referred to.
